In the city of Butare, southern Rwanda, an Assemblies of God church stands on a plot of land where hundreds of victims were buried in the mass genocide of 1994. Today, around 250 believers worship the Lord in that church and receive biblical teaching every Sunday morning. Those believers know that the bones of hundreds of people lie literally beneath their feet, as a constant reminder of great loss, yet the believers have faith that God is bringing new life to their country and the church.
Their worship is vibrant, and they are passionate about Jesus! But the families in this church and many other churches across Rwanda need our help today! They have a great desire to study God’s Word at home with their children, but they need discipleship materials in their language. As you read farther, please consider what you can do today to help Africa’s Hope provide the families with resources. Here is one example of the need.
A family of five in that Rwandan Assemblies of God church runs a small shop. They live day-to-day on what little they earn. They enjoy the teaching from their pastor each Sunday, but they have a desire to study the Word of God more in depth, as a family. Because of their limited income, they can’t afford to spend even a few dollars on discipleship books. Africa’s Hope has a discipleship curriculum called Living the Truth. It’s a comprehensive Bible study from Genesis to Revelation, written for small groups, families or Bible classes in the African context. Lessons include readings, memory verses, and discussion questions. We have started the translation of Living the Truth into Kinyarwanda, the main language of the people in Rwanda, but we need your help to complete it and make it available to Rwandan families. We estimate that between 8,000 and 10,000 families are part of the Rwanda Assemblies of God.
For just $20, we can translate and provide this 7-year Bible study curriculum to one Rwandan family. Living the Truth will help this family of five and many other Rwandan families journey through the Scriptures and grow together spiritually. Your gift of $60 can help three families; $100 will help five families; $200 will help 10 families, $1,000 will help 50 families, and so on. The family Bible studies that my wife, Cheryl, and I did with our kids were very important. They helped with our spiritual development as parents, and they helped to write God’s Word on our children’s hearts. We want the people of Africa—the people we love so dearly—to have the same opportunity for spiritual growth. The churches in Rwanda are multiplying rapidly, and Africa’s Hope is deeply committed to helping train pastors to lead them. But we can’t neglect the families in those newly planted churches. They need to be discipled on a daily basis, not just weekly from the pulpit. Living the Truth can fill an important role in the growth and spiritual health of Rwandan families, small groups or Bible classes.
Thank you in advance for your gift today of $20 or more on the response form enclosed! Your gift will help Africa’s Hope provide this important discipleship resource for our brothers and sisters in Christ in Rwanda and their families. As each family grows in their knowledge of God’s Word and their faith, the church in Rwanda will be strengthened to face the challenges of taking the gospel to that nation.
