Abdullah was a devout Muslim and an important community elder in East Africa. He lived by shari’ah (Islamic) law and believed in jihad (Muslim holy war). He believed in Allah as the one true god and that non-Muslims should convert to Islam or die.
But then a miracle happened!
Let me tell you Abdullah’s story. I have changed his real name (and edited his photo) because he and his family have had to go into hiding since their conversion to faith in Jesus Christ.
Before he became a believer in Jesus Christ, Abdullah was a governor within an Islamic area. When Abdullah was diagnosed with terminal cancer, his doctors gave him no hope of survival. He was in constant, terrible pain and could not walk on his own. Unable to continue his role as governor due to his physical condition, he was only able to help sell food items for the family business. His family carried him to the market, where he lay on a mat wrapping food items for customers using scrap newspaper or magazine pages.
One day, while rummaging through discarded magazines, he found a Christian publication with an article about Jesus Christ as both Savior and Healer. This intrigued Abdullah. Islam teaches that Jesus is a respected prophet and teacher, but not a savior. Abdullah kept the article and privately read it at home later that night.
Desperate to be relieved of his terrible pain and stay alive, Abdullah cried out to God, “If You are real and if You are the Healer, then please, Jesus, heal me and I will follow You the rest of my life.”
Abdullah woke up the next morning completely healed! When he testified of the miracle before those at the mosque, he was attacked and beaten for heresy. His neighbors began calling for his execution. Abdullah managed to escape the threats, but his possessions were taken from him, and his wife and child were sent away. Abdullah lost everything—his job, position, friends, and family—all in one day because of his declaration of faith in Jesus!
Over the next few weeks, Abdullah managed to travel to a city where he was safe and able to be discipled in an evangelical church. Later, he enrolled at an Assemblies of God Bible school in East Africa where he received training for ministry.
Today, Abdullah is reunited with his wife and child who have also come to faith in Jesus. He plans to begin evangelistic ministry among Muslims across East Africa, despite the risks and persecution that are sure to follow.
What an amazing testimony! Please remember to pray for Pastor Abdullah and his family as they proclaim Jesus among Muslims who desperately need to receive the gospel.
Pray also for the thousands of Swahili-speaking pastors who are currently ministering to Muslims or preparing to go to the many Muslim people groups across East Africa.
Africa’s Hope has produced the Discovery Series book Muslim Ministry in the African Context as a valuable tool to help equip Africans for this specialized ministry. It is already available in English, but the mother tongue of many East African pastors is Swahili. Of the 38 titles in the Discovery Series, we have identified the Muslim Ministry book as a high priority for translation this year. It is an important tool that will help meet the needs in East Africa right now.
You can help make this book available in Swahili by giving today. It only costs $5 to make one copy available for an African pastor. With $25 you can make Muslim Ministry available to 5 Swahili-speaking pastors; with $50 you can bless 10 pastors; with $100 you can bless 25 pastors, etc.
We need several Africa’s Hope partners who are willing to give $500 or $1,000 to help us make this book available to hundreds of pastors right away to prepare them for and expand their ministry outreach to Muslim people groups.
Islam is strong in East Africa, and westerners cannot easily go into places like Somalia or northern Kenya to share the gospel. But national believers who know the culture and can speak the language can be highly effective church planters.
If God touches your heart regarding this need, would you respond? Together, we can make this book available in Swahili and place it in the hands of thousands of pastors like Abdullah.
Thank you for your love for Africa. We greatly value and appreciate everything you are doing to help us reach this continent for Christ.Give now
